I’d betray these poor burned bodies if I came here to talk with friendly words.
The old Inquisition had its rack and its thumbscrews and its instruments of torture with iron teeth.

Every week I must learn of the untimely death of one of my sister workers.
The life of men and women is so cheap and property is so sacred.
There are so many of us for one job it matters little if…ONE HUNDRED AND FORTY SIX of us are burned to death.

You have some dollars for the sorrowing mothers, brothers and sisters by way of a charity gift.
But every time the workers come out in the only way they know to protest against conditions which are unbearable, the strong hand of the law beats us back…

« Je trahirais leurs cadavres carbonisés, si je venais vous parler sur le ton de la camaraderie. La vieille inquisition a ses râteliers, ses moyens de domination et ses instruments de torture aux dents d’acier.
Chaque semaine, j’apprends la mort prématurée de l’une de mes sœurs.
La vie des femmes et des hommes ne vaut plus rien. La « propriété privée » sacrée nous a remplacés. Il y’a tellement de gens à postuler pour un travail, que la mort de 146 d’entre nous, ayant péris par les flammes, ne changera rien.
On donne de l’argent aux mères, aux frères et aux sœurs en deuil, comme pour se donner bonne conscience. Mais à chaque fois que les travailleurs descendent dans la rue, et qu’ils s’opposent à ces conditions de survie insupportables, la main puissante de la loi nous réprime.
Je ne peux donc plus parler sur le ton de la camaraderie, à vous qui êtes ici et souffrant de cette situation. Trop de sang a été versé. Je sais par expérience que c’est aux travailleurs de sauver leur propre peau. Et le seul moyen que vous avez de la sauver est celui d’un puissant mouvement de la classe ouvrière »
